And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
(Luke 10:41-42 AKJV)
STOP AND REST
Jesus didn’t chastise Martha for what she was doing. The preparations/serving in the verse preceding this that she was distracted by, according to HELPS Word Studies, “for the believer… specifically refers to Spirit-empowered service guided by faith”. Wow! Even something good He’s called us to can be used to distract us from what is most important.
May this be a reminder to all of us that it’s not about what you do FOR Him. He died so
you can be WITH Him. All ministry is birthed naturally from that place. Keep your heart set on spending time with Jesus each day and you will find strength, wisdom, and peace for all the other things God has called you to do.
Prayer: Lord, help me to remember that there is only one thing needed. As I find myself getting worried or distracted, even in things you’ve specifically called me to, help me to just STOP and sit at your feet. Help me to reject any thoughts like, “I am being lazy” or “I should be doing something else”. May I use your faith to stand in trust that this is truly the only needful thing and You will multiply my peace, joy, energy, and time as I faithfully rest in your Presence each day. Thank You that no amount of time that I spend with you will be lost or without value. Love You, Lord. Thank You for loving me! In Jesus name. Amen.
