The Quest to Perfection

Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.  Malachi 1:14 ESV

Before Jesus came, Jewish priests were required to sacrifice male lambs without defect. Corruption, greed, and disregard for the Lord caused them to offer lesser animals. Ultimately, pride was the root. They had a more perfect sacrifice, but chose to offer what they wanted instead.

Today, we have many people who verbally choose Jesus, but they are not offering Him as their perfect sacrifice to God. Religious traditions of man, some created initially as a reaction to people perverting the Gospel of grace, have left many confused offering themselves plus Jesus.

If you have vowed Jesus, don’t sacrifice your own blemished self by striving to be perfect in order to be good enough to meet God’s standards. It cheats both God and you. Apart from Him you are blemished and can do nothing.  All of your righteousness is filthy rags, but in Him you are the righteousness of God already – perfect, holy, and without blemish. That is your gift through His offering.

You don’t have to fear submitting to this grace just because some people have abused it. They are truly the greedy priests in this verse and God will expose their corruption for what it is on the Day of Judgment.

Where is your heart with God? If you genuinely want to do what pleases Him, then thank Him. God gave you a heart of flesh when you accepted Jesus, just as He promised. His pleasure now comes as you offer His Son, the perfect Lamb of God, daily by faith. Rest in His work and be free to live a life that naturally conforms to the “new” commandment to love Him and others… even if imperfectly.
