Homemade Tartar Sauce Recipe (Easy and A Healthy Choice)

We are having a heat wave! I was going to post a pot pie recipe, but this weather makes me think of a fish fry. So… I’m sharing our family’s best secret sauce. It’s a hit with everyone (that’s saying a-LOT, because I’ve got picky eaters) and it’s even healthy – with protein and half the fat of regular tartar sauce. I usually eyeball my mixture, but I’m gonna give you some measurements today. Play with it to find your favorite balance or just throw it all together like I do. It’s pretty difficult to mess up.

HOMEMADE TARTAR SAUCE

Ingredients:

1/2 cup plain 0% Greek yogurt (I use Fage or Chobani)

1/2 cup (heaping) mayonnaise (I use Hellman’s Light or Olive Oil blend)

1/2 tsp mustard (or just a decent squirt)

3 large dill pickle spears, diced

dash of hot sauce

Preparation Instructions:

Place all ingredients into a medium sized bowl and mix together until blended. That’s it! Enjoy! (Serves several.)

We use it for every fish fry and Abigail even eats it on her sandwiches. It makes a healthier mayonnaise alternative.

HIGHLIGHTED BENEFITS

  • PROTEIN – Cutting it with Greek yogurt adds some protein and turns this traditionally high fat condiment into something better.
  • LOWER CALORIES AND FAT – Than traditional tartar sauce, again because of the sneaky Greek yogurt swap.
  • LIVE ACTIVE CULTURES – Greek yogurt also contains good bacteria to help maintain a healthy gut.

This is still a condiment, so you won’t be consuming a ton. It’s still nice to know that what you are ingesting packs a better punch than the normal stuff, so you can feel better about taking an extra scoop and feel better if your fish is actually fried!
