For those of you who are keeping the April Sweet Sacrifice Challenge with me and are fasting, here is one of my morning meals that will work for you if you are on a sugar, meat, or even a Daniel fast (depending on your personal parameters). I am fasting all added sugar, so that means no honey or agave for me (although add it to this recipe when you are not fasting for a yummy, healthy start to your day). This oatmeal gets some sweetness from the strawberries and raspberries. The cinnamon helps give that sweeter taste, as well. You’ll still notice the lack of added sugar, but this is a fast. It’s not supposed to feel like you are dining with the Queen. Take every moment of difficulty to cry out to God and thank Him for His Word, Spirit, and Son. Ask Him to help you to remember that eating doesn’t always have to be a party in your mouth (see video below). Thank Him for when it is delicious. Ask Him to reset your taste buds to desire what is good for your body and to help you to choose foods that fuel your body well regularly, even when you finish this fast. Enjoy!
Easy Fruit and Nut Oatmeal Recipe
2 packets of organic plain instant oatmeal (100 cal each)
5 organic strawberries, diced
small handful of almonds, crushed (I put them in one of the empty oatmeal packets and smash them with the bottom of a knife to crush. Walnuts are good, too.)
~ 1 tsp of ground cinnamon (I don’t measure, just sprinkle all over the top.)
dash of ground ginger
dash of ground nutmeg
unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- Prepare oatmeal according to package directions.
- Add all other ingredients, except almond milk, and stir well.
- Add milk and enjoy.
Tips and Tricks:
Add a spoonful of Polaner All Fruit to sweeten if that is allowed on your fast. It has no added sugar and uses juice concentrate to sweeten. I like the cherry and strawberry.
