For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

When we were in Alaska this summer, we drove as far north as you can go by road in this country on the Dawson Highway to Deadhorse. While on a little bus tour there, we learned many facts about Alaska and Prudhoe Bay oil. One of the nuggets we were given was that you will find all the gems in the world in Alaska except for one. Apparently, the cold climate and harsh conditions in the area are great for making these rare treasures.

Comparatively, those cold, difficult seasons in life that we tend to hate in the moment are designed by the Creator to yield precious gems within us, good treasures that shine hope and the radiance of Wonderful Jesus through us onto others. Perhaps as you meditate on this verse this week, you can muster up gratitude, even in the middle of great difficulty. God never allows something that He can’t turn into good for you, who love Him and stand firmly on His love for you as evidenced in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Hold onto Him, Dear One, and trust there is purpose and great spoils from this war.

Wet, but happy, after diving into the Arctic Ocean… Well actually, Abigail was thrown in by Dad.

It was a heat wave that day. Sunny and nearly 70 degrees F – not in the frigid water, though!
